I have a big problem, Im pregnant 23 wks and I have had my thyroid removed 2 years ago, Got a blood test when I was 4 wks pregnant and My tsh levels were low so the doctor put me on 50 mg tyroxine instead of my usual 100mg then at 20 wks I had my next bloods taken tsh was high at 9. So now Im back on 100mg Im worried about the baby. IS THERE A TEST i can have done to see if there is a lot of damage to the childs brain? What effects should be looked for in a scan? please help me.

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFULL.  I HAVE HYPOTHYROIDISM AND WAS DIAGNOSED AT 28, BUT DID NOT HAVE SERIOUS EFFECTS FROM IT UNTIL AFTER HAVING 2 CHILDREN.  MY SECOND CHILD HAS BEEN CLASSIFIED AS LEARING DISABLED DUE TO A SHORT TERM PROCESSING MEMORY ISSUE AND MY FIRST CHILD HAS A COMPREHENSION PROBLEM.  I DID EVERYTHING RIGHT DURING PREGNANCY, ATE WELL, DID NOT DRINK OR SMOKE AND EXERCISED.

I HAVE FOUND A REPORT FOR A STUDY THAT DEMONSTRATED THAT PREGNANT WOMEN NOT GIVEN THE RIGHT DOSE OF THYROID HORMONE DURING PREGNANCY HAD A GREAT RISK OF CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABLITIES.  (Maternal Hypothyroidism and Fetal Development -GOOGLE IT)

There is no specific test - the TSH of 9 is not that high -- the study looking at IQ issues noted more problems with TSH >13.  Stay at the 100mcg for now and retest in 4 weeks, keeping the TSH around 0.4-2.0.
