Can a thyroid cyst rupture?

Dear Dr. Lipo,

I had a thyroid cyst drained along with nodule biopsy just over 3 weeks ago.  The cyst was over 4.3cm.  It has now come back and is just as large as before, but I now have pain along with the uncomfortable choking feeling.  It seems like it is getting bigger every day.  My next appointment with the Endo is Sept. 16th.

My question is: Can thyroid cysts rupture?  Can they just get too big and pop?  If so, what happens and is it dangerous?

I need to know if I should try and get into to see the doctor sooner.  I was told that I need a repeat biopsy because the first test wasn't conclusive.

Thank you,
Sandy

Hi Sandy, I have had both cysts and nodules dissolve...actually 3 of them to be exact. One nodule was complex (cystic and solid) and the other 2 were solid. So don't give up hope. I wouldnt worry about cystic having cancer....usually your solid and complex nodules.  The PEI is a good procedure if it is causing you problems. Make sure they do follow up ultra sounds at the 6 month mark. Good luck!

Dear Dr. Lupo,

If there is cancer somewhere in this large cyst and it pops, can it spread the cancer throughout my body?

Thank you,
Sandy

Dear Dr. Lupo,

I forgot one more question.  If there is cancer somewhere is this large cyst and it bursts, could it spread the cancer throughout my body?

Sincerely,
Sandy

Dear Dr. Lupo,

Thank you very much for your answer.  I'm sorry that I spelled your name incorrectly in my first email.  I am sleep deprived due to worry over my thyroid issues.

Sincerely,
Sandy

They don't usually rupture - if they do, it causes more swelling and pain but then usually the body resorbs the fluid.

The options are surgical removal or PEI (ethanol injection -- good procedure, but hard to find a doctor who can perform it) -- would first need a good biopsy proving it's negative before the PEI.

Unless surgery is planned, it sounds like a repeat biopsy/drainage is in order.
