FNA result

Doctor,
In clinic ultrasound result shows a complex, mostly cystic 22.4 x 10.0 x 16.2 mm. There are few tiny complex right thyroid nodules that are too small for FNA. Following local anesthesia, 4 ultrasound - guided FNA passes are made into the left thyroid mass. They yeild 3 ml. of dark brown fluid. All of the fluid can be drained by FNA. Additional passes are guided into residual solid areas and labeled "F' Alcohol fixed and air-dried smears are prepared. Fluid is sent for cell button. The smears apear adequate.

Microscopic description:
Smears are paucicellular and show a few small follicular cells arranged in a small cohesive groups. There is no significant cellular crowding. The nuclie are small and uniform. A few siderophages are seen. There is moderate to abundant degenerating thick and thin backgound colloid. The cell button shows fibrin, possible degenerating colloid, and a few siderophages.
Diagnisis:
Benign degenerating colloid nodule with cyst formation, ultrasoun-guided fine needle aspiration of left thyroid mass

Thank you. Is the presence of follicular cells normal in a benign colloid nodule?

Sounds like a benign cyst based on the history - usually we repeat US in 6-12 months unless there is a change in size in the interim.  The lump under the chin is not likely related - but tell your doctor about it

By the way my endo scheduled me in 9 months and that's the time he wants to do US. Do you think 9 months is not too long? or do you think I need to seek for second openion?
