HELP

I have been taking synthroid for aprox 5 years. By the time I found out I had hypothryroidism I gained 90 pounds.  After taking synthroid I have no longer gained weight but can not loose.  I am very active and have a healthy idea of foods.

I just had lab work TSH .22  FREE T3 2.9 AND FREE T4 1.42
and they are going to lower my medication from 150m to 137m.  I despritly want to try a combination of Synthroid and Cytomel to see if this will help.  I also have fluid retention, dry skin, still tired (not nearly as bad as before).  I am not sure if the doctor is going to let me try this or not.  I am upset any suggestions if he does not, or anything I can possibly tell him that will help.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!!!

the doctors depend on blood tests to decide when lower and higher your thyroid level.  if you check out the book feeling fat fuzzy and frazzled it talks about why the blood test SHOULD NOT BE THE ONLY FACTOR and that there are other ways to check your thyroid levels such as taking your temperature b4 rising in am and several other home tests to confirm your thyroid is low.  in that book it tells you what to tell your doctor.  the author is dr shames.  i settled for doctors advise for 11.5 years and have had enough and finally started doing research on my own and found a doc who is not specialist in thyroid but has dedicated much of his studies to it.  ARMOUR is awesome and has t4 and t3 so not have to take two meds.  good luck

HI,
I dont know about synthetic t3 only yet but armour was scary scary.  I do admit that maybe I didnt do armour correctly.  I talked my family doctor into it.  She did a calculation that 3 grains of 60mg would be closest to my synthroid.  she was right but it was on the higher end.  I also had read that splitting doses was better and wanted to ease in so instead of taking the three grains at once i took one grain and then another at dinner.. disregarded last grain.  both times within 10 minutes i had panic attacks, heavy feeling in chest, sense of the excitement of going to a job interview that i'm not super prepared for. i guess that is anxiety LOL  the next day i went to my pharmacist to see if actually splitting the grains in half would be ok. (didnt want to alarm my doc as she was progressive in trying the armour for me) Ask me about the stupid endo i seen first. OMG  anyways Pharmacist split grains so i took a HALF grain with late breakfast and wwwwhhhoooo hoooo panic attack  EQUAL or greater than the day before with a WHOLE grain.  still i persisted as i just knew armour was my salvation.  same thing at dinner (a half grain)  Day three finally called doc.  She was very concerned.  i went to office she put me on toprol-xl and that brought my heart rate down from 96 to 62  So this is day two of no thyroid meds at all LOL tomorrow i start synthroid again.. did i mention my tsh fell from 1 to 10 in four months.  I've been on synthroid my whole adult life.  I'm 40 and have been on it since 18 , 10 years on 150mg  To be fair I've had panic attacks off and on since oh 1995. but this seemed worse with armour.  I also had radio active iodine at 18 so hypo was induced by ral.  but still have high antibodies of graves.  so i get to be ugly, fat and crazy LMAO.

Dear Overwhelmed,
I've been where you are and felt I needed to leave you a message. Four years ago I was diagnosed with a tyroid that doesn't work. I was on sythroid all different levels and still gained 30+ pounds was very tired and deeply sadend. For awhile I thought it was all in my head. Then just this year I took the advice of a friend who said I should be seeing a specialist. Sure enough I did. That day would be the best day of my life since being diagnosed. Two months ago I started taking 50mcg of sythroid and 5mcg of cytomel. I have so much more energy through the day and I've even lost 4 1/2 pounds! I really think that the cytomel works for energy and weight loss. Good Luck and stay positive!

I also have gained alot of weight since I found out about my thyroid problem. I also take Synthroid, and I have not had any luck losing my post-baby pounds. A friend of mine sugested weight watchers by just counting calories, so you might want to consider that. I have nodules on my thyroid and I am scared that it might turn into cancar. I stay depressed because of my weight and sometimes I can't look at myself in the mirror.  I try to exercise, but it's hard to find time with three small children.  Surely there is something out there to help us with this problem.  I just wanted you to know that I understand where you are coming from.

Ask your doctor about a water pill.It makes you tinkle alot.If you know what I mean.I don't know any thing about cytomel.Sorry.All I know about hypothyroidism is that you do gain weight your fatigued, you lose hair. Can you help me maybe?I have several 1cm cysts on my thyroid gland. My throat has been soar for a really long time.It feels like I have a little marble stuck in there.Did you have cysts on your thyroid gland?I feel tired,my hair comes out,and my skin flakes off.I've gained about 15 pounds in 2years.Do you know what they do when you have cysts on the thyroid gland?Any information you can give me I would truly appreciate. You check medicines out on line.Thyroid medicicnes probably and maybe what you can take with them,as long your healthy enough.TNT406
