Hyperthyroid and in the middle of a thyroid storm- Need help

I recently had a thyroid scan and am awaiting the test results, but in the meantime I was presenting with hives all over my body. Blood wrk showed my thyroid was "normal" but that I have thyroid antibodies present.  I was put on Prednisone, anxiety medicine, and beta blockers to control the heart palpitatons and mood swings. I feel horrible and like I am falling through the cracks with my own doctor.  I can not get in to see and endocronoligist until Sept. 18th.  I feel like by then my body will have shut off. I am trying to have a positive outlook on this but the meds are almost as bad as the condition. I had a full hysterectomy Dec. 2004 and I am 26 years old.  I was had ovarioan cyst problems and endometrosis severly.  I have two small children (ages 9 and 5) and we went to the beach for the weekend three weeks ago. I was getting sunbumps from my estrogen pill so stopped taking it cold turkey.  Three weeks later I am still dealing with all of this mess.  I feel like I am in the twlight zone.  My vision is usually fine and all of asudden I am having blurred and double vision. I have lost 8 ponds in the last 9 days.  It feels like there is acid burning in my throat, I am losing hair, and sweating horribly. I really am trying to push my doctor because I know that I have to be my own advicate, but I would like to know if this is just my own symptoms gone crazy or if this is normal?  How serious can this be? I had problems after my first pregnancy and it was thought to be ITP.I went through all of the scans and test and graves disease was then ruled out.Any help or ideas?

hello, i'm a little confused, can someone pls help. my symptoms are weakness, some weight loss, bigger appetite, feeling like a adrenalin rush, fast beating heart, loss of balance at times, 2 finger tremors, alittle shakey, heat intelorance. dr says throid is normal, but 1 point low, 3 I believe, and something with pituitary gland. I'v had a back injury for the past yr, during which i got a bad appendicitis, so i've had vicodin for 1 1/2 yrs. could it be signs of to long on meds? or they think its parkinsons and won't even consider throid. any suggestions?  i very confused, my symptoms are more throid, i think when i looked on the internet, but they won't listen. am i grabbing at straws? i am slower and does take me longer to do things, but i  attribute it to chronic back pain, which hurts to do anything. thanks for the help.

hI, YES THYROID DISEASE IS HEREDITARY,  I KNOW I HEARD CONFLICTING STORIES, AS WELL, BUT IT IS DEFINATLEY HEREDITARY.  I TAKE 100MCG OF SYNTHROID, I HAVE BUMPED A FEW TIMES TO GET TO THAT LEVEL BECAUSE MY SYMPTOMS WERE NOT GETTING BETTER, ONCE ON 100MCG I STARTED TO FEEL BETTER AFTER ABOUT A MONTH OR SO.  I'M HAVING A FLARE UP NOW, WHICH MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT I NEED TO BE BUMPED UP IN DOSE AGAIN, BUT ALSO AM BEING TESTED FOR ADRENAL PROBLEMS, AND UNTIL THAT IS WORKED OUT, MY ENDO CANNOT TOUCH MY SYNTHROID, HOPEFULLY SHE WILL KNOW SOON. PLEASE DO, SHARE WITH US YOUR TEST RESULTS, GOOD LUCK SHANNON

I spoke to the doctor today and he told me that my thyroid scan came back normal.  I believe that this is graves disease and I have gome untreated for this for the last nine years. I am going to call my gynocologist tomarrow to see if he can get me in to see an endo. sooner than the doctor I am seeing, which is just a family practioner.  I will call tomarrow and find out what my THS levels were. I just was told that they were in the normal range. As you can see I am very new to this and cramming my brain to find out what I can about all of this.  I learned more on this site than from ER doctors, allergists, and my primary care doctor.  Thank you so much for talking the time to write.  My Dad is hypothyroid and also has vitiligo.  I have heard conflicting stories about it being hereditary.  Any advice?  I am also going to get more blood work done to find out my most recent platelet count, T3, T4, thyroid antibodies numbers and THS levels.  I really don't know what to think.  After the birth of my daughter, nine years ago, I broke out in hives massively.  I was just 17 years old and my platelet count had plunged to 23,000.  A normal range is between 175,000-375,000. I was put on Prednisone for 4 months, gained forty pounds, had a thyroid scan, blood tests that showed my thyroid to be 3 times high, and 4 times low but all in the normal range.  I had a bone marrow biopsy looking for lupus or luekemia and finally I was diagnosed with ITP which is an immune system disorder.  I have been taking Claritin for hives for the last nine years thinking that it was an allery related to my cat.  As long as I took my Claritin I rarely had any problem.  What kind of thyroid medincine do you take and how soon does it startto work?  I will be talking to the doctor at some point again tomarrow and would like to try and come up with any new stuff I can on this.  I the meantime I am most worrried about the heart palpitations.  What kind of effects does this have on the heart long term? I am normally a perfectly functional person and lately I am barely functioning. The doctors do not seem to think that this is s big deal at all and I have never felt crappier in my life. Thank you again for all of the advice and any new would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, as ShannieK said, since you tested positive for thyroid antibodies, your thyroid is not normal! They can tell you this all day long but autoimmune process going on with your thyroid will cause symptoms! Many posts by people with normal thyroid hormones but elevated antibodies have been posted lately. Medical sources on the web, state PLAINLY that antibodies againt your thyroid will cause it to respond by releasing elevated levels of hormones (temporary hyperthyroidism). Antibodies with other labs normal can also indicate early Grave's Disease, so you will probably need follow-up blood tests, until you know for sure if it's Hashimoto's (hypo) or Grave's (hyper). It sounds more like Hashi's.
If your Dr. says let's recheck in six months but you feel it should be instead only a couple or few weeks, let him know this. You are paying for the tests, not him and shouldn't matter to him if you need these sooner for your own comfort!
As Shannon said, what were your results? If you wish, list them on here with the ranges too. We're just patients, not Doc's but might have some useful imput!

Hi, have you been put on thyroid meds?  if you read my adrenal post above, you will see, that I also was present for antibodies, TSH normal, and a mess!!!!  I too, was put on beta blockers, anxiety meds, but I did not start to feel better until they started me on Thyroid meds.  If you don't mind me asking, what is your TSH, and anitbody readings, this will give us all a better idea, for maybe some more solid advice.  I thought I was hyperthyroid too, because all of my symptoms were hyper, but i was in fact hypo, with the antibodies, those alone, can make for some unbearable symptoms.  It is important to start treatment to slow the progression of the auto immune process, but alot of dr's don't believe in doing this if you are in normal range, this is what I have found.  How did your scan come out?  Keep us posted, you are not alone. shannon
