Kelp, Seaweed, etc. bad for thyroid?

Nearly 15 years ago when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, I thought my specialist said that unlike with other thyroid conditions, I should never eat kelp, seaweed, etc. nor should I take high doses of iodine. I wish I had paid more attention at the time because now I can't find any information about this subject. Is there any truth to this or did I somehow remember it wrong? Thanks!

There is not reason to avoid iodine with Hashimoto's.  But would not take excessive iodine.  So, no reason to change the diet, but no benefit in supplements with iodine.

The time when iodine should be avoided is thyroid cancer patients preparing for I-131 therapy OR hyperthyroid patients (ie, Graves or toxic nodule(s)).
