Dear dr. Lupo,
I read that having hyperthyroidism/graves disease increases your risk of ovarian cancer, if this is so what tests or procedures should be taken to detect this deadly disease? Iam 40 years old with no family history of female cancers! How often should I be screened?

Thank you, tracey

I do not think that there is a strong association between Graves' disease and ovarian cancer.  They may have been referring to a slight increased risk of certain cancers in patients who have been treated with high-dose radioactive iodine, which is typically not the case for Graves' disease.  You should talk your OB/GYN about your ovarian cancer risk and appropriate screening.
