Parenstisias

Can someone tell me what the connection is between Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and parenstesias?  This developed in April 06 after I started treatment.  Mostly just a vibration feeling in my foot, but some sudden numbness in hands and feet and occasional nerve pain.  I went through a whole battery of horrid torture tests and gave about a quart of blood to the lab.  Not much was discovered.  The symptoms slowly disappeared by August.  This May they started up again and seem to be gone now.  What the heck is going on?

I know that there is a relationship between the parenstesias and hypothyroid, but can someone explain why?  What causes it?

Hmmm, I dunno I have showed them but they all say my mouth looks ok and maybe i should see a dentist, lol another trip ha but it seems my tounge has swelled and never went down since I went under the attack. I have a friend that works for a oral surgeon and she tells me its because of a autoimune problem which very well is the thyroid. I did read about someone else saying there tounge was swelled to so who knows I am still breathing so thats good :) God Bless and take care.....

No skin peeling anywhere! So far, my mouth has remained normal. -- I don't know what would cause skin in mouth to peel. Have you asked your MD? Could it be an allergic reaction to fillers in the med? I had burning skin and nausea and headache from the generic drug (levothyroxine). I had to switch to the brand synthroid. -  I know hypo can cause skin to become drier, but I don't know if that can affect the skin in your mouth or make it peel.

The mouth part I am talking about like skin peeling of some sort, not tingling. I am going to a internal doc Tues to get this all hashed out and shoing her alot of these.

No problems with my mouth. I wouldn't say that I feel vibrating, I'd call it a mild tingling in my feet. Shortly after my hypo/hashi diagnosis I felt tingling all over my body, especially in my back. I've undergone numerous tests, even back/disc tests and NOTHING else is ever found. As my tsh got lower, the tingling n my body stopped. The tingling in my feet has improved, but it's still there. My tsh is 5.3 now, which is still too high. I also have carpal tunnel in my wrists which began when all my hypo symptoms started earlier this year.I've been watching this board since April for other poster who have hypo and tingling and noticed quite a few!!! All state (like myself) that they have undergone all sort of tests (neuro, labs, orthopedic, etc) and NOTHING else is found. My B12 is fine!! My back is fine, Neuro exam/test fine, no lesions, no diabetes, no anexiety - so WHAT ELSE can it be but thyroid???

Well they told me I just have thyroiditis, is this the same thing as Hashimotos? The neuroligist just kept sending me back to the endcornoligist and he does not relate to my problems so i am going to a internal med doctor now to get all her opinions and i am also going to print out alot of these to mail to the endo. and show the internal med doc as well, maybe then they may realize this problem in other people. I was told my levels were in range but still have problems even B12 level although i went ahead and had a couple of injections done and now i just take the tablet everyday. I have had several test and a nerve conduction study which showed a problem with L5 S1 but they have never done nothing about it. This past week i have cut down on my levothyroxine to 25mcg a day to see if I feel diff., so far my hands do feel a lil different. My leg is in terrible pain everyday but I beleive it is the sciatic nerve and i have had 3 epidural injections for it and it did not help.

I see that there are posters here who do NOT have hashimoto's (the autoimmune disease that causes hypothyroid) and they too have neuropathy symptoms, so that might be somewhat comforting to hashi patients (like me) who think that they are prone to developing another autoimmune diseases such as MS.-- I don't have pain or muscle weakness, just the tingling feet (used be all over my body, but that's eazed up now it's mostly in my feet), and carpal tunnel in wrists. All my symptoms started at the same time, including more classic/common hypo symptoms. I'll keep taking the tests and follow up w/ various MDs, but IF nothing else can be found, it just seems like it has to be from thyroid!!!  It's interesting to see that posters have same tingling symptoms after RAI or TT as those of us with hashimotos!!! Someone posted to me a while ago that after your tsh is at one (or normal range) that it takes a bit of time for you to feel better/normal, that it isn't instant. However, I suspect that if you have hashi or had RAI or TT you might never feel exactly 100% well again!!

my story is the same as newbee2000 bad paresthesias everyday all over.Horrible pain.Thought I was getting ms.Have had every test known to man, everything normal.Symptoms started right after I had rai treat for hyperthyroidism.Levels started to rise from .01 tsh before rai then 6.59 and l started getting paresthesias at around 4.2.1 and my levels went down on there own without meds  to 2.81 then started synthroid. for a trial to see they help .levels are at 1 now and guess what? still have paresthesias.I think it takes our bodies a long time to recover.I hope they go away eventually.I have been sick for  6  and it has been horrible. I am going to have some more YES MORE tests done by an internest and rheumatologist  to see if anything has been missed. But deep down I know it is my thyroid!! I also have ulnar nerve pain around both my elbows, anyone else experience that?

To address the issue of possible other causes for neuropathy, I have been through numerous test, scans and blood labs, and MDs have found nothing else wrong with me!! My B12 is normal, no back problems, no rheumatoid disease, no MS, no neuro lesions, no lyme disease, no diabetes, NOTHING but hashi/hypothyroid.  My tingling and carpal tunnel started when at the same time as my other hypo symptoms. To me it only makes sense to conclude that the tingling and numbness are from the thyroid problem!

In Dec 2006 i went to neurologist they started Neurontin to help on nerve pain but that didn't help much . Also have you tested your B12 level mine was bit low so they thought could be pernious Anemia but after i had few B12 injection my level was fine and didn't give much help. So i end up on Hypo thyroid is the only issue . My current TSH on July 19 was 5.6 FT4 1.0 , So now i am on 75mcg . Here is the link which explain more about B12 deficiency symptoms.

I feel the numbness and tingles everyday  an nerve movements through my body. I was told my my blood results were fine a month ago but i dunno what it was, in march it was TSH 2.22, T-3 FREE4.0,
FREE THYROXINE 0.98, I dont see a AB or TPO. I also get pain in the back of my head to, that worrys me alot but they done a MRI of the brain to, I have had MRI of all my spine and them results were disc degeneration L5-S1 level with central canal stenosis , and degenerative facet joint disease L3-4andL4-5 S1, so I just dunno anymore so confuse because the orthapedic place acts like there is nothing they can do and keep mentioning my thyroid causing problems.

Please keep us inform about your result. How often you feel numbness and tingling in your hands and feet ?. Can you tell us where is your TSH stand currently  ?. Do you have your AB like TPO or Thyroglubin number ?.
Are you taking any anxiety medicine also like cymbalta ?

Ok we all have thyroid problems with neuropathy sypmtoms, are we just nuts here or what? I know the feelings and they are real and there are many of us here with the same things. I am seeking a pain managment center to see if it will help me any, they can do all kinds of things like nerve blockers and so on, not sure how it works yet but Sept 6 i have a apt.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hypothyroidism can aggravate nerve problems -- the classic example is carpal tunnel syndrome.  With a normal TSH of around 1.0 (w/ treatment) there should be little contribution from the thyroid problem on the nerve problem.

Hashimoto's is the antibody/autoimmune attack on the thyroid that causes Hypothyroidism, so it does not directly (as far as we know) cause the nerve problem.  However, the presence of one auto-immune problem brings up the small chance there's another that actually is the cause of the nerve problem.

For what it's worth, I've also had tingling and numbness that began when I was diagnosis w/ hashi/hypo. Tingling began in my feet and then developed in my body (mostly my back). I also have numbness in hands (carpal tunnel). The tingling in my body subsided as my tsh level declined. The tingling in my feet has improved, but is still there a little. My tsh is still not in the normal range even after 4 or 5 months on synthroid. I have also been through numerous tests, and no other medical problem can be detected!  I'd also like to know WHY hashimoto's and hypothyroid cause neuopathy symptoms!!  Do you know if your tsh level out of the normal range (or above even above 1)  during the periods when the tingling returned?
