Question for Dr. Lupo

Dr., you commented on a post of mine a week or so ago and I was hoping for some additional insight.
In my post, I had stated that my TSH AND T4 levels were both low and you indicated that I should considered seeing an endocrinologist to make sure my pituitary function is normal.

Could you tell me ... is it "normal" for a TSH level to diminish almost completely while on Synthroid? I have hear YES and I have heard NO.

Here are my lab results for the last 5 years ...

Free T4    1.08    (0.77 - 1.61)
TSH         0.01    (0.34 - 4.82)
3/22/2012    - Physician said "Results stable, NO med change."

Free T4    0.66    (0.77 - 1.61)
TSH         0.02    (0.34 - 4.82)
1/19/2012    - Physician INCREASED Synthroid to 75mcg

Free T4    0.86    (0.59 - 1.17)
TSH         0.15    (0.34 - 4.82)
8/5/2011    - Physicians said "Results stable, No med change."

Free T4    0.53    (0.59 - 1.17)
TSH         0.95    (0.34 - 4.82)
4/29/2011    - Physician INCREASED Synthroid to 25mcg

Free T4    0.55    (0.59 - 1.17)
TSH         0.59    (0.34 - 4.82)
7/1/2009    - Physician said "Results stable, No med change."

Free T4    0.76    (0.59 - 1.17)
TSH         0.25    (0.34 - 4.82)
10/13/2008    - Physician said "Results stable, No med change."

Free T4    0.70    (0.59 - 1.17)
TSH         0.90    (0.34 - 4.82)
4/16/2008    - Physician said "Results stable, No med change."

Free T4    0.80    (0.59 - 1.17)
TSH         0.39    (0.34 - 4.82)
9/7/2007

I have been doing some research on pituitary disorders and am completely scared out of my mind!

Please help!!

TSH can be this low due to Synthroid but that pattern is usually associated with a higher T4 level.

If you have not had a pituitary evaluation, this may be reasonable.  The other thing to do would be to check a total T4 as well as a T3 to help understand the thyroid profile a little bit better.  It may be worth seeing an endocrinologist if you're not artery doing so.  Many of these situations are simply a falsely low normal free T4 result from the lab.
