Scalp issues

Hi Doctor,

Have you seen people have scalp problems when their TSH is out of whack.  I am already hypothyroid and take Synthroid.  I believe it is probably time for a dosage adjustment.  I have intense scalp itching and flaking.  Could this be due to the fact my dosage might be incorrect?  Or, is this problem due to something else.  Thanks for your insight.

Hi there:
I have been on Eltroxin 150 mcg for two years, when I come off my pills I have severe dandruff, or whatever it is Thryoid dandruff.  I get really bad sores from scratching my head.  I went out and bought Head and Shoulders with Hydrazinc.  I used it twice, and the stuff is gone.  No more itch.  I'm now back on my pills.  (I came off to be tested) But I will continue to use the Head and Shoulders.  In between regular shampooing.

My dandruff gets very severe.  *** I hope this has helped you a bit****

You might want to try using Dermarest shampoo and Scalpicin liquid, both available over the counter.  Dermarest helps dry out the scalp sores and irritation, and treats the flaking.  The Scalpicin liquid quells any burning/ itching.

I have just got my latest thyroid results and I am hyperthyroid not hypothyroid. So 100mcg of thyroxine a day is too much for me.  I am still having problems with flaky scalp. My tsh level is 0.3 and ft4 19.

Yes, best to optimize dose (ie TSH around 1.0) then re-eval.

I had a total thyroidectomy 4 weeks ago and am on 100mcg thyroxine sodium which I'm guessing is Synthroid. I mentioned it on a previous thread that I actually got lumps of what I thought was dandruff on my head and when I picked at it my head was left weeping and very sore (sorry for the yucky description) I've been using anti dandruff shampoo and it has improved but as I'm feeling so tired and have continuous headaches I think I need my thyroxine dose increased as well.  So after reading of similar stories on here it looks like yes this is a symptom of hypothyroid.

I have this problem with my scalp as well.  I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's but have had symptoms for years so I know mine is not due to Synthroid as I just started taking it.
