Throat Fullness, ? see a Ear, Nose, Throat MD?

Hi Doctor,
I have been treated for hypothyroidism since Nov of last year. I take Synthroid daily 50mcg now. Last month my TSH was 7.08 and T4 6.8, two weeks ago I had my labs repeated and I now have a TSH of <0.10 and a T4 of 10.5. I had and ultrasound of my thyroid that showed the gland having inhomogeneity with multiple area of scattered nodularity, which are enumerable and small. No specific nodule otherwise seen. R lobe measures 5.2X1.3x1.8cm and Left 4.4X1.4X1.8. I have been having this full feeling in my throat for over a week now. At times I feel as if I am being choked. My family doctor wants me to see a ear, nose, throat Doctor. I was wondering  the symptoms I have if I need to see a thyroid specialist. I feel very uncomfortable and frustrated. Thanks for your time.

You likel developed a thyroiditis causing swelling and inflammation as well as transient hyperthyroidism.  The ultrasound decription is typical for thryoiditis.  Would see a thyroid specialist rather than an ENT in this case -- the good news is, that if I am right, this will resolve on its own within 6-8 weeks usually but in the meantime, we often hold the synthroid for a few weeks to not add to the hyperthryoidism while things are setling back down  and there is a need to monitor thyroid function more closely (every 2-3 months) for the next 6-8 months to make sure stable.
