Thyroid - Graves Disease

Is it normal to have a continual headache, nausea, with Graves ? I wam seeing a specialist in a few days ,but was told I had this 2 weeks ago  - In that time - my throat has swollen on both side and in in the front - My heart rate stays at  110 - 140 beats oer minute - I take the medicine that has been given to me and it does not slow it down below110 - I am just scared and concerned that the symptons are getting worse and I do not see anything getting better - WHAT would you suggest that I do ??????

I came to know that I have hypothyroid yesterday. My nurse called me and told that I need to take one more blood test for t4 and t3 levels. This ,ight take a week. My TSH is already 7.77. Is that okay to wait for 1 more week ...I think its a postpartum thyroid. I had my first baby nine months ago. I am really worried

Thanks for the info . IT has been a horrible weekend. I am going to call to see about getting someone new tomorrow - I feel sick on my stomach and when  I try to eat it does not stay down to long. When you started your meds were you this sick on your stomach ? What did you do? I dont sleep much and last night was awful - my neck is swollen and hurts on the right side when I turn my head. I am so tired of feeling this way - My pulse is still over 120 with the meds and everytime I take them am and then later pm I feel sick on my stomach and have to lay down. I would love to hear if you had these issues and how you got through them . I am dealing with a lot right now and I know that stress is not good for me , but I totaled my car the other night - the roads where awful and icy - it took me 6 hours to get home . Luckly I have another care to drive  - my car was towed away today to see about being repaired but they are not sure if it can be fixed or not.. Any way long story short .I would really like to hear how you got through this process. Any help or advice would be great to hear.

You need to find a new doctor asap. your levels are quite out of whack ,but on that high a dose of Tap you need to be monitored carefully, including liver tests. Please get a doc  and make sure you lab again soon, so you can drop the dose. You'll go hypo fast I think on this dose. You do need the meds you have Graves disease, but it needs close monitoring.

I received my results from my scans and here is what it said
Lab Work last week
Thyroglobulin Ab   83
Thyroperoxidase Ab 380
Triiodothyroine 8.22
Free T4    7.77
TSH <0.014

From my Uptake Scan
Abnormal 24 Hour Radioactive Iodine uptake of 76.9%

I was put on Methimazole of 40mg a day
Also had Atenolol increased to 50mg a day

Now I have become more nause could not hold my head up last 2 days feel like I have been run over by a truck - now its moved diaharrea, and vomitting .

my doctor has now moved hospitals and I am not sure what I should do.
I have no energy and I feel exhausted even more since my meds were changed than I did 4 days ago. My head is still pounding and my eyes feel weak - I start working or watching tv or even driving and I feel like my eyes are closing on me. My heart is not pounding as loud as it was 4 days ago , its beating around 100- 110 beats per minute now. I dont feel like eating - I am just tired.

I would really like your advice as to what I should do next.
Anyones information would be welcomed.

hey!
I have been on  Tapazole about 1 1/2 years now. My doc has undermedicated me, over medicated me, but my free t's mostly stay in the normal range. I feel lousy(racy) if I go a little hyper, I feel better on the higher tsh or lower free t's. I too had a rapid heartrate at rest when first diagnosed but  many heart tests later showed I really didn't need a beta blocker, my blood pressure was always low, like 90/60 or 70 the docs were afraid I would pass out. After being on the right dose of Tapazole, my heart  raciness subsides. You need to be on Tapazole too, not just a beta blocker. Don't let a doc RUSH you into RAI, try the Tapazole first,I know quite a few women who have been in remission for a few years now,it can be treated with meds for about 3 or 4 years anyway (my doc said) and weaning off slowly. Become an expert on the disease, or at least read everything you can about Graves and join message boards like this one. I know of one lady who has been on Tap 30 years!! She posts her liver profile and her numbers are normal.

Yes, I had problems with being nauseated when going hyper.
For me they say "Hashitoxicosis"= hypo to hyper to hypo to hyper etc.

Had an I-123 uptake and scan last week which was elevated and diffusely so.
The larger module was cold though, so biopsy next week.  Oh well.

I got nausea, headaches, insomnia, salivating, elevated heart rate during the day (always over 100, usually 110-115) with "revving" up at night time to 140 and over as well.

I was put on a beta blocker as well.

Hope you get the right dose of meds soon and feel better.

JenMix -- you may need a higher beta blocker dose to slow the heart rate down until the hyperthyroidism can be treated.  Most likely the next step will be tapazole to bring the levels back into the normal range.  RAI treatment is another option as well, but I usually normalize things first with tapazole then re-evaluate long-term treatment options.

Hi  Graves Girl ,

I am on beta blockers actually 2 now - I have been on them for 6 weeks now - The heart rate of 110 and up is at rest - It seems to be reaaly high at night around 140 - I have an appointment on Wed to talk to another doctor. I have had the radio active screens - two of them now - I received paper work from one dr yesterday  that stated my levels were 3 times the normal rate - so I am very concered about the next steps. I am taking advil all day long for a headache and it just does not stop it. How long have you had Graves ? What treatment options did you discuss / take ?

hey Jen,
are you on Tapazole or generic Tap? Are you on a beta blocker too? Yes headache can be a symptom of Graves. How long have you been on the meds? It can take about 3 weeks to kick in( Tap) I'm not on beta blockers so I don't know about those. Your heart rate is still too high. Is this at rest? The doc (Dr. Lupo) might have an answer for you.
