Thyroid nodule

I got an ultrasound done, and it turned out I have a thyroid nodule. The dr said it was benign, but I am curious to know how he came to the conclusion without doing a biopsy? I didn't think ultrasounds could tell whether a nodule was benign or cancerous. Am I wrong?

Ultrasound characteristics are very helpful to predict benign vs cancer, but aren't perfect.  Would see an endocrinologist who does his/her own ultrasound (try to find an ECNU certified one near you) to see if this requires FNA biopsy or observation.

Also, I had low tsh levels, and was recommended to see and endocrinologist in 6 months.
