What do these results mean?

I just got the results for a blood thyroid test. The nurse told me that I had a Hyper thyroid and to make an appointment with an endrochronologist, which they could not take me in till Nov. 17. The Nurse told me that a normal function of a thyroid  0.45 thru 4.5   and my test read   under 0.004 .  By looking at these numbers can u tell me if my thyroid is extremely Hyper and if maybe I should get an earlier appointment? I also like to run and exercise , should I stop ? My understanding is that my thyroid will have to work even harder if I continue to exercise, Please respond
thank you,
Carmen

Hi Carmela, my tsh was .005 and I was sent to the endo by my primary doctor. Endo, did other blood tests,  and with the exception of tsh, other were normal. She determined to wait 3 months to retest my thyroid levels. The only symptom I had, was feeling fatigued. She prescribed a beta blocker to help with my blood pressure and racing heart, I also excercise daily, and  my doctor stated I could continue my normal routine, as tolerated. If I were in your shoes, I would give my doctor a call and ask his opinion on excercise.

Hi Carmen,

Are you having symptoms of hyperthyroid?  racing heart, palpitations, weight loss, nervousness etc?  Look up hyperthyroid and you'll easily find a list of symptoms.

If you are having these symptoms, it would be good to reduce the exercise to reduce the possible strain on your heart until you get seen and evaluated and treated, if necessary, by an endocrinologist.

If you are having these symptoms maybe try to see the endocrinologist sooner.  If you're not having major or many symptoms probably 17th is ok.

As I understand, exercise doesn't affect your thyroid directly and exercising won't make it work more or less hard.  The problem is more likely the effect on your heart and energy levels.

It is consistent with hyperthyroidism -- cannot definitely tell how severe it is without looking at the T4 and T3 levels.  This would be the nexst step -- then determining the cause of the hyperthyroidism (can be done with blood tests and/or I-123 uptake and scan).  Your primary can order the T4 and T3 to determine the severity of hyperthyroidism.

hI,

If you are not having a problem with exercise (ie. you are not getting palpitations or racing heart), there should be no reason not to continue exercising - and it helps you feel better.  If you want to be cautious, keep your exercise intensity light to moderate level until you've had everything sorted out.

Yes, do check with your primary about this all, as he will know you better than we do.
