Why do people get elevated Reverse T3?

What is the reason for this?  My endocrinologist said people get it when their body is fighting off a virus.

Is that correct?

High reverse T3 often occurs when the body is under stress and is trying to de-activate T4 rather than convert it to more active T3.  Testing it has little to no clinical utility.
