Worried about results and solid nodule

I had an ultrasound on October 16th for an enlarged thyroid.  It revealed a 2.5x1.5x3.4 cm complex nodule arising from the isthmus, an 11x7x9 mm mid pole solid nodule and at least 3 2mm midpole nodules.  Impression:  Heterogeneous thyroid with multiple bilateral nodules.  No further studies were indicated.  I am beside myself with worry.  I just lost my mom to cancer.  Can you please explain this to me?  My dr. will not tell me anything until my blood work is finished.

Provided the blood test does not show a low TSH, the next step would be FNA biopsy of the 3.4cm nodule and possibly the 11mm nodule (depending on ultrasound characteristics).

With the comment about heterogeneous thyroid, there may be Hashimoto's -- so in addition to TSH, we would consider testing TPO and Tg antibodies.

90% of the time, nodules like yours are benign.
