crusty scalp after thyroidectomy

I had a thyroidectomy 4 weeks ago and am now on 100mcg thyroxine. In the last week I have developed a crusty scalp, I thought it was dandruff and picked off a lump and it began weeping and was very sore. I use anti dandruff shampoo. Could this be something to do with my thyroid levels not being right yet?

Perhaps -- would test thyroid levels as 100mcg may not be enough for you.

Before I had my thyroid removed I did actually have a major outbreak of dermatitis. All over my hands under my arms and down the sides of my stomach. I went to the dr's and because I'd just moved from New Zealand to Australia the dr thought it might be a change in washing powders etc I never knew that thyroid problems can cause dermatitis. Thanks for that info, I will mention that at my specialist appointment.

I believe you might have Dermatitis, which I've read can be a symptom/ side affect of a thyroid condition.  It is more or less a skin allergy that causes crusting, flaking, and sometimes a gummy buildup.

If your scalp issues are your only side-affects, try using a dermatitis shampoo like Dermarest and Scalpacin liquid.

I have to see my specialist next Tues to review my thyroxine levels so hopefully he may have some solutions.   If he is able to solve it I will come back and post on Medhelp. Thanks again Judy

I myself had the same problem. I reduced my dose and it dried up and went away. Then I increased my dose just to see and it came back again. Reduced it and it dissappeared again. You might have an allergy to something one of the fillers in your Thyroxine. I have a corn allergy and synthroid is in a base of corn starch. Maybe try another brand? I have found a pharmacy that will recompound my perscription without the corn and lactose fillers. It made a big difference for me.

Best of luck.
