If you are hypothyroid, medication MUST be taken during pregnancy with close monitoring to keep TSH in the 0.3-2.0 range and many women need a dose increase during pregnancy. Untreated hypothyroidism can cause neurological development problems, miscarriage, pre-term delivery and other problems.
Hi, Dr. Lupo doesn't usually answer twice.
Usually thyroid meds have to be increased during pregnancy. It is quite usual to have to increase immediately after pregnancy is detected, which is why they recommend close monitoring for pregnant women.
Monitoring is done by blood tests for TSH (target 1 - 2), FT3 and FT4, both of which should be in the upper half of the reference range.
Scans are not normally done during pregnancy.
Will the medication dosage change (become more or less) during pregnancy? How is pregnancy monitored when having hypothyroidism? Are thyroid scans safe to do during pregnancy?
