infection from FNA or something else?

I apologize, I know I already posted a question about my cytology results, but I have this new development as of yesterday...

I had an FNAB done last Monday on my right and left lobes. The left side. I was sore, as they said I would be from 10 needles but that only lasted 24 hours. Yesterday morning I woke up with tender soreness in my left lobe which had the complex cyst (and came back "rare mildly atypical follicular/hurthle cell"), most noticeable upon swallowing. This morning that soreness has traveled from the bottom left lobe up the side of my neck. Could i have gotten an infection from the FNA? Or is this a normal reaction? I'm not quite sure what to do if anything. Any thoughts? I'm now also 38 1/2 weeks pregnant (not sure if that influences anything).

Also, my thyroid now looks swollen. The right side was swollen from the 2 cm cyst, but they drained that--it's still swollen. didn't know if that could also be from the FNA? It remains tender, too, but upon palpation--not when swallowing like the left.

For what it's worth, my thyroid had no pain or tenderness prior to the FNA.

Thank you for any and all advice/feedback!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
infection is uncommn -- usually ice and aspirin (if ok with OBGYN) are adequate -- this is not unusual and may last 7-10 days in some patients.

Hi,
What I'd said back on the 12th was that my results took three days to come in...but I admit the endo STILL hasn't called me back, I got them from my pcp who was cc'd on the cytology report. My throat was sore after, not before. But it sounds like that's pretty common. My results were rare mildly atypical follicular and Hurthle cells in my complex mass while the cyst on the other side was benign. The endo still hasn't called me back even now. I have found a surgeon to consult with as I *think* those types of cells have to be surgically removed no matter what. That appt isnt' until the 24th of May. My baby is due to be born next week (if she's on time!) so that gives me some post partum recovery time before the surgical consult and surgery :) DId you have your FNA yet?

Yes I would agree ..... if all goes as it usually does, by the time you feel an ouch then you feel pressure feeling different and then they are done!

I equated it to amniocentesis when pregnant  ... more of a pressure than a terrible pain ... the dentist or endodontist's novocaine hurts worse I thought.

The procedure is definitely not something to worry about, it's pretty simple. I had ten needle, but two were for a local lidocaine anethetic (though I don't think that actually did anything since I could feel it all). You feel a little ***** and a little bit of a burning sensation if they use lidocaine. After that I still felt the needle sticks and kind of an achy discomfort, but nothing that can be described as worse than bothersome. After that I felt a little strange swollowing and was sore that night, but in 24 hours that had pretty much cleared up. I have very very light bruising that you can barely see. It's definitely easy. Good luck tomorrow with your FNA ;)
