Dear Quiltbug,
Your diagnoses of hypothyroidism is due to your TSH being elevated and as far as the T-4, I would need to see the range the lab used as a reference. Your TSH though is definately elevated because most labs have a range on it of about 0.5 to 5.0. The reason TSH elevates is because your thyroid is underactive and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), is trying to get your underactive thyroid to produce more hormone, as your levels have begun to drop. Did they check yout thyroid antibody levels? This would usually be what's called your Anti-Thyroglobulin and Anti-Thyroperoxidase Antibodies. These two tests are to see if autoimmune disease of the thyroid is causing the hypothyroidism. There are other causes, so this test would be helpful if you have not already gotten one. Have they put you on thyroid hormone replacement medication? Have they mentioned you haveing a goiter or nodule? These are a couple of things you might ask.
Also, a really good info. source is the thyroid.about.com website but you'll get get research by simply going to a search engine and putting in key words like "hypothyroidism, hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyroid disorders" etc...
Make sure you also get your own copy of every test you have done. You pay for them and it's your right. This way, you it will help you with research you do and questions you ask of other like us. If you have your lab report, tell us all the readings on it, including the reference ranges and we might be able to comment more.
Best Wishes.

Dear Jimlow,

I just got a call this am from my dr.  I asked about the tsh# & t4 #, thanks to a close friend who ironicly has hyper for 13 years and she is just getting info on the seriousness of this disease (gassy?). I will be going to see my Dr. and asking several questions since we only spoke for a short time and she will answer any concerns.  Regarding the Anti body level, and the goiter or nodule, I wasn't aware of , I will ask her. Thank you for this information.  I also will take your advise & check out the other website, the more info I get the better understanding I will have.  This was just by fluke that I went in to get check for, because I would get dizzy for few seconds, several times a day and thought it was an inner ear infection?? The Dr. sent me for a second test to make sure that she wasn't diagnosing me improperly.  anyways, I will let you know more next week.   Thank you again, newbee.
