nodule pain

I was recently diagnosed with a large nodule on my thyroid and will undergo surgery for removal.  I also have pain on the same side as the nodule that sometimes radiates down to my shoulder and upper right back (shoulder area).  Is this common?

what about pain up towards the ear (same side as nodule).  More like a pressure than pain actually.  Nodule is almost 2cm.

referred pain is possible due to nerve irritation by the nodule in the thyroid.  this also sometimes occurs during thyroid biopsy.
