thyroid antibodies

Hi my sister-in-law was advised to have a thyroid function test which came back normal however the doc sent her a letter saying that although the function test was normal she had positive antibodies and had to be re-checked in 4 months.  What are positive antibodies as the doc letter not say anything else.

Thanks

Sounds like a very good Dr. who is really on top of things because most don't have patients get the antibodies tested along with a thyroid panel.
The reason he wants to re-test is because he knows there is an autoimmune attack against her thyroid and it will eventually become dammage. He wants to catch the onset of hypothyroidism, so it can be treated.
Did she get the tests because of symptoms? I ask because so many have testfied on here of serious hypo symptoms, with only the antibodies being abnormal and all other levels normal. Unbelievably, some Dr.s still do not believe symptoms can occur unless the hormones are out of range and don't usually even bother to have a patient come back for retesting.
Hold on to that Doctor!!

Thanks for your help. She got tested as she had her daughter (my neice, who I have spoke about) at hospital having a thyroid scan and the doc said he could see she had thyroid problems herself and felt her neck.  The hospital doc told her to go to her GP and get tested this is the result of that.
