Abdominal pain and bloating: Is it I.B.S. or candiasis

by hashi, Dec 11, 2005 12:00AM
Iwent to my dr. on Dec.6 and told him I have had bloating for about 3 weeks and at that time no lower abdominal pain, cramping. He said it could be I.B.S. He said to take a fibre supplement and ovol,go back to taking 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil which I got away from. My B.M.'s aren't as frequent as they were when I was on flax seed oil. The day I saw him, I told him I was just starting to have lower abdominal pain too. He left it at that. It's now five days later and the bloating isn't as bad but the lower pain is still there. i went on a I.B.S. diet as much as I knew of to see if that would help. What is this candidasis that people with thyroidism are talking about? Parden my ignorance, but I don't know everything there is to know about thyroidism. Any suggestions. If I still have the pain in a couple of days I going to deman some action from my dr. Thanks.

Candidiasis is not generally recognized by traditional medicine to be associated with thyroid disease -- perhaps future research will prove there is an association.  That being said, I have had patients who on their own follow the Candida diet and report feeling better -- I don't know if this is placebo effect, true effect, or the effect seen when someone strictly adheres to any sort of dietary regimen.

IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion - ie see a GI specialist to make sure nothing else is going on before such a diagnosis is applied to you.

When my thyroid hormones are too high or low, I have IBS symptoms. Also, am sensitive to certain foods at these times. Increasing my fiber a bit seems to help in my case.

I also have been diagnosed with IBS, and although it started way before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, so did a whole lot of other symptoms (weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, blueish frozen fingers and toes, weird menstrual problems, etc).  I have found that eating too much bread, or bread-like foods causes me very painful cramps, so I try to stay away from those.  At first I thought it was wheat related, but I can eat cereals (shredded wheat) all I want with no problems at all.
Can you explain what this candidiasis thing is?

I don't know alot about candida. I know it is an overgrowth of yeast throughout your digestive system. They say if you have I.B.S. you almost certainly have an overgrowth of yeast. I just found out about it from reading my book on I.B.S..I have alos seen some of the people on another web sight talking about it. There is alot of info. on the web about it. Sorry i couldn't help you anymore. One thing to avoid is if you have it is all yeasts, makes sense doesn't it.Ha! Ha!.  Bye for now. One more thing. How were you diagnosed with I.B.S. My dr just said it sounds like I.B.S. and left it at that. If I do have it I want to know so I can watch my diet and keep those flare ups down toa minimum if that is possible.

I was sent to a specialist by my GP... had terrible cramps all the time.  Double over at work and everything.  Then I had the runs for about 6 weeks... it was terrible.
They did a barium enema (just awful) cuz they thought it might be diverticulitis, but found nothing.  Also told me stress was a main part of it.  No cure, just "management".  I know now to stay away from bread/rolls/donuts etc.  It's really hard, but I feel so much better (then awful again if I do give in).
Good Luck!  :o)
