about how long does it typically take "if" it is going to begin to work properly? But, I often wonder WAS it ever working right in the first place before the surgery bcz of symptoms they now say were thyroid related all along but dismissed until now as not knowing why they were there.
partial thyroidectomy - 1/9/07
Recent bloodwork for TSH - My Endo said "the thyroid is still not functioning properly" and uppded Synthroid from 50-75mcgs.
My TSH before surgery was 2.4
w/subclinical symptoms (constipation, dry skin, muscle cramps)
After surgery TSH was 3.9
w/enhanced hypo symptoms as noted above
Even if the thyroid was functioning ok the TSH goal is .5-1.0 due to pap microcarcinomas found but looks like I'd be on synthroid anyway bcz other side not working right.
B4 surgery I was told "MOST LIKELY the thyroid will work fine and you won't need meds" ???? (I realize, though, I need the Synthroid anyway for supression but I wonder why the other side isn't working or is it in {{{{{ shock }}}}}}} from surgery and the infection I had in the wound and recent urinary tract infection after passing numerous kidney stones (yes, been on alot of antibiotics but doing great now!!!).

IF this was more than one microscopic papillary, the consensus is to have a completion thyroidectomy and then I-131 -- definite data is lacking on this topic, but that is the leading thought currently.
If it is a single focus of microscopic PTC then a TSH of 0.3-0.8 is reasonable and will require synthroid.
If this were simply benign disease and you had a normal intact lobe then with negative antibodies there is a 70+ % chance the thyroid function will ultimately be normal although in the months after surgery, there may be a transient increase in TSH.

To: PS ...the TSH 3.9 was on Synthroid after surgery
& forgot to mention when subclinical I gained an unexplained 25lbs in a year for the first time in my life.
