Three weeks ago my dog had a seizure and her temp shot up to 109. She was in the clinic for a couple fo days and they thought she had a heat stroke. Her calcium level was 4.5 and they gave her calcium for multiple days until she was around 8. Then as the week progressed she got bad again and her calcium was rechecked and it was at 5.1 so they started her on Calcitriol 0.25MCG and Calcium Carbonate. She responded well and her calcium was up around 12.1 last check, at which point they lowered her dosage. In all of this tests her phosphorous was also high and her thyroid levels were normal so the last test we were waiting on was the parathyroid levels (we assume these would be low and confirm the diagnosis). This test just came back and the levels are normal. Now the doctor is stumped and even a specialist has not been able to offer much insight. If it was cancer hypercalciema would probably be the case. I have searched online and osteomalacia seems like another posibility but it doesn't seem likely either. Right now she is doing good, she is a little tired (not abnormal for summer) but she is eatting, playing, drinking, and walking normal.
Any ideas what else could cause these symptoms when parathyroid levels are normal?

May have been a transient hypocalcemia due to whatever caused the severe fever. Carefyl with the calcitriol - can cause hypercalcemia and kidney failure. The normal PTH level esp during Ca therapy suggests against hypoPTH.

I just spoke to the doctor again and he now says that from what he found this makes sense. If her parathyroid was acting normal at the time the took the blood her parathyroid level should have been much higher because her calcium was so low (5.1). So in this case a normal reading is actually showing the problem. Does this make sense? As far as the hypercalciemia, I'm taking her weekly to get tested until the dosage seems correct. There hasn't been a cae of this in los angeles in this size dog in a while so they say it is all new to them.
