Am I suseptable to other autoimmune

by AppleJacs, Apr 10, 2007 12:00AM
Hello I am Aj.

I am very new to this thyroid stuff. I had my second child 6 months ago.  I had a new Dr. for that pregnancy.

Long story so I will get to the short one.  I thought I would mention to her how I have tendency to drop things a lot or it takes a few tries to grab something.  So she decided to run some blood tests.

They said my thyriod came back a little off, and sent me for another. The only thing I remember her saying from the was my TSH was 10.6, she said it was suppose to be around 1. or so, she said I was Hypo. Then she took more blood and they wrote on paper, antibodies are abnormal and is refering me to an endocrinlogist.  I don't know what it means, my follow up with her isn't for another 8 weeks.  I can wait no rush.

She started me on Levothyroxine I have been on it a week.  I know it takes 6-8 weeks for it to kick in.  I have been reading a lot about thyriod diseases.

Funny thing is I never experienced any of the symptoms of thyriod disease lol, it was a funny catch.  I am not concerned I know this is a controlable disease.  I am just curious, if it turns out it is autoimmune am I at risk of other autoimmune diseases? Does it follow any sort of pattern?

ThxAj

You have hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's -- the most common cause of hypo -- ie, the immune system attacks the thyroid.  There is a slight inc'd chance of developing other autoimmune disease, but most don't.

Most likely, this was brought about by the pregnancy -- post-partum period is one of the most common times to develop hypothyroidism.  It is important to get it under control before the next pregnancy.

I am hoping this is just from my pregnancy and in due time it will straighten itself out.  I normally feel just fine.

To: As far as dropping things
I notice you mention having trouble grasping things.  There is a tendency for thyroid patients to also have carpal tunnel syndrome.  There can be weak grasp associated with carpal.

Probably would have to see your dr about the carpal. I have worn splints (available in most pharmacy/ dept stores) at bedtime off and on for yrs since I also have carpal tunnel.  Recently I was diagnosed hypothyroid (Hashimoto's) and am hoping the carpal tunnel will improve with Synthroid treatment and whatever else my doc prescrbes.
