Atrial Fibrilation

by isamiam, Mar 31, 2008 02:04PM
My 65 year old mother has been on synthroid for 30 years. 15 years ago she had atrial fibrilation that was caused by overmedicating with Synthroid. She is now having the same problem that recurs on a daily basis. Her cardiac Dr says its not the synthroid although my gut is telling me her body can not longer handle the synthroid and the Atrial Fibralation is caused by her Hypothyroidism MEDS. Is there any possiblity the synthroid could be causing her problem?

We would typically see lab evidence of excessive synthroid in these cases -- ie low TSH -- if that is not the case, then it's not likely the synthroid.  But it would not be unreasonable to target a higher TSH (ie 3-4) to see if she feels better -- however, most likely the thyroid condition is not the cause of the a-fib at this point.
