Autoimmune Diseases - Hashimoto's and Lupus

by TerryJo, May 10, 2005 12:00AM
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism by my family doctor.  He never performed the antibody test to determine the specific disorder.  I've been in remission for a year or so after taking PTU for a couple of years.  After becoming pregnant recently, I went to see an endocrinologist to make sure my thyroid hormone levels were ok.  The endo determined that I have Hashimoto's.  Is it unusual to have started out hyperthyroid and then be diagnosed with this disorder, which I understand generally results in hypothyroidism?  I also have two aunts with lupus.  I know that it is also an autoimmune disease.  Should I be concerned that I may be likely to develop lupus in the future as well?
