Autoimmune disease after TT?????

by SuzieQTT, Jul 12, 2007 12:00AM
I am 2 weeks post op for TT and biopsy was all clear and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis was confirmed...thyroid was very large with multiple nodules.  I was wondering if I am at risk for any other autoimmune diseases?  What happens now that the thyroid is gone?  How does the body react in regard to the immune system?

There is a minimal risk of other autoimmune disease, but most of my hashi patients only have hashi.  The immune system's ability to fight infection is generally not impaired.

Well if one has one Autoimmune disease that means he /she vulnerable to get other auto immune disease. Stay clam and try to stay away from stress also.

You will take some form of thyroid hormone replacelemt medicine for life as you have no thyroid to produce this very important hormone that your body needs. It is not certain that you will end up with another autoimmune disease. Focus on living well after your TT as that should be plenty of challange. There is a lot of resources and info out there to learn from, also lots of good books. Good luck!
