Bloating and stretch marks with thyroid?

by ShannieK, Jul 21, 2005 12:00AM
Hi, have talked with Jimlow about this just today, after I posted a question about cortisol levels?  Ever since last year when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, I have gained a tremendous amount of weight, it is unreal!!!!!  I have 3 kids and never had stretch marks above my belly button, even after having my twins.  But now I have purple stretch marks everywhere, from shrinking and bloating and shrinking and bloating.  I take Lasix 80 mg, that makes me ppppppp all day long, but you know that i retatin so much fluid, that I can lose 20 pounds in one day after taking my water pill, and the next day it is back.  My doctor has me concerned because she has mentioned it being a symptom of someone with Cushings disease, which in short is a overproduction a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands.  But isn't it true that the same is just very prevelant in thyroid patients?

I read your posting and it had me thinking, i have put on some weight too.. about 35lbs. I am so miserable with my weight right now. I have often wondered if some of it is water retention, how do you know if it is? and what do water pills do? is it safe to try them ? any side effects ?

I'm sure you probably have quite abit, as I do, something about the thyroid effects all that as well,  Just seems to ruin everything huh? Ha Ha!!!!   You would be surprised how much all that bloating goes down with a water pill, but just remember, it's not permanant, and don't let it get your hopes up, that it will help you to lose weight..   I'm not convinced it isn't the reason why I have the stretch marks now.  I bloat up and shrink down every time I take a pill.  Kinda like a yo yo diet.

Hi, I have severe water retention, but the thing is, that it is temporary relief, from the bloating.  Like I mentioned above, I have put on so muc weight, and when I take a water pill, I can lose 20 pounds in one day easy!!!!!  But it doesn't last, you get excited to see the weight go down, especially because it keeps going up with all of this.  But i can take a water pill, lose 20 pounds, and the next day it is back to the same, you may have a days relief of your bloating symptoms.  I take Lasix, which is a pretty powerful loop diuretic.  I take 80 mg, on top of that, which is a pretty high dose.  I cannot take it everyday because I get severly dehydrated, makes your mouth, eyes etc, really dry!!!  Also causes me to be tired on top of already feeling tired all the time, and when I first started taking it, I got real dizzy.  It does take the body swelling down, but it won't stay down, don't think it will take away the weight gain, that's what I thought, and it's just not true.  With your weight gain did you get any stretch marks?  I can tell I've retained alot of fluid, when my face gets real puffy, along with my abdomen, really bloats out like it's full of air.  My hand and fingers get real stiff and hard to move.  Hope this helps.

eww ya I dont have many stretch marks only a few from when i was a teenager, i didnt even get them with my babies. so I think I will not go that route. thanks for the advise. Im sorry to hear how much trouble your tyroid is causing you . I definatly feel your pain, and I actually feel lucky it seems some of you have it pretty bad, mine is tolerable and I can function alot better now than at the beginning, i dont know if its just because I am used to it now or what. but still when you dont feel well every day for years  it takes such a toll on you  !  good luck
