Calcium supplements pre thyroidectomy?

by countrycarole, Apr 30, 2006 12:00AM
Is it a good idea to take calcium supplements before my scheduled surgery (which will be in approx 3 wks for a large substernal goiter) in order to prevent low calcium which I understand could be a complication of a total thyroidectomy?

A friend of mine who had thyroid surgery was advised by her doctor to start taking Calcium with Vit D and Magnesium in preparation for her surgery. She did not have any low-calcium issues after her surgery as so many others have had so perhaps this works.

I am just surprised that if this helps, my doctor did not mention it to me. Any thoughts or opinions? Thanks.

Start the calcium after is fine in most cases unless you simply want to get used to the meds for a few days beforehand.  It certainly would not hurt to "pre-load" with calcium except in the case where it would falsely normalize the immediate post-op calcium levels and a precipitous drop be missed for several hours.
