I have had radiation therapy treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma in Dec 2005. I got my yearly Thyroid profile and here are the results:

T3, FREE: 3.24 (normal 2.3 to 4.2 pg/mL)
T4, FREE: 1.25 (normal 0.89 to 1.76 ng/dL)
TSH, Ultrasensitive: 5.6 (normal 0.350 to 5.500)

These testes were taken Fasting at 10 a.m.
What to interpret?

I feel extremely fatigued, have a slightly dry skin, appetite is poor, I do have moderate hair loss, and i dont feel energetic at any time of the day. Also, my concentration is poor, cannot socialize, and there is always the fear of fatigue in any activity i undertake (which comes to be true)

This looks like the beginning of post-radiation hypothyroidism.  Given the symptoms, would consider thyroid hormone treatment.

Radiation exposure increases thyroid nodules and cancer -- particularly in children/adolescents who receive it.  There may be some risk for adults, but not as great.

You are extremely hypo.............are you on thyroid meds?

by worriedude, Jun 19, 2007 12:00AM
Thanks for the advice, doc. But given normal T3 and T4, and elevated TSH, does that imply Hypo?
Some more inputs from my side:
I am male, 24.
I have had my PET scans which were clean. I am presently in remission.

Ironlady, what do you mean by "extremely" hypo? I thought 5.6 is just borderline. Another thing which i dont understand, most doctors here recommend TSH around 1.0, so why do then labs give normal values as upto ~ 5.0 ?

Because the labs did not change the range to reflect 0.3-3.00 - this is why. They need to get with the program... I am not sure why they would not... The Endocrine society has to pressure them. Even anything above 2 could receive treatment... Good luck!
