DHEA influence on TSH level

by aubaer, Feb 13, 2007 12:00AM
I have recently stopped taking DHEA after almost 12 months. As I was having the usual side effects of restlessness, losing hair and itchy scalp. My TSH was 1.8 - 2. In the last few weeks I have been not feeling too well so I went to my GP,had a blood test to find out that my TSH has shot up to 2.9. The only reason can be from not taking the DHEA. Is this normal ? I now have pains in the muscles & joints and what bothers me the most are pains in my chest - though apparently nothing is wrong with my heart. My GP has said just take more L-Thyroxin -T4 medication or leave it as I'm still within the so called "normal range" though even a small amount does make me feel worse. I'm baffled as to what is going on. My FT4 is very high, almost at the end of the normal scale, I thought this might mean that there already is enough T4 is my blood ? Or could this mean my Adrenals are weak and do need the DHEA ? Should I try to take more L-Thyroxin ? I would be greatful for a reply as I'm totally bewildered...
Thank you in advance.

DHEA may increase thyroid binding -- but this would cause the opposite of what you describe (ie, TSH would decrease after stopping the DHEA, not increase) -- this could be a lab variation with TSH -- would repeat the levels in a few weeks to determine -- my goal TSH is about 1.0 and keep the Free T4 in normal range.

Have had chronic fatique symtoms for over 6 years now since burnout in 2000, have had numerous tests completed to no avail. in 2000 ft4 reading was 14,pmol/l.  free t3 = 3.3 and tsh was 1.75miu/ml. most recent tests  free t4 = 10pmol/L, free t3 = 3.8 and tsh = 2.17mIU/l.
Gp has continually advocated that thyroid function is normal and that fatique is nurological due to stress.
