Do I have hypothyroidism?

by sarajane1, Jul 14, 2007 12:00AM
I have recent blood tests but am unsure what they mean.  My TSH is 1.847 - my T4 is 1.16 - and the Triiodothyronine, Free, Serum is 2.6.  The last seems to be the only one on the low side.  I am experiencing fatigue, weight gain, lack of sleep, and mood swings among other things.  Do you feel a low dose of thyroid medication is warrented and might be helpful, what are the risks if I do not need this medicine?  I am 48, beginning menapose and have Fibromyalgia.  Thank you for your time.

The thyroid is likely normal despite the lowish free T3 level.  Unless the TSH rises to above 3 and the antibodies (consider testing these -- ie, TPO and Tg antibodies), I would not think that a trial of thyroid hormone would be beneficial.

It looks like you do not have hypothyroidism at least yet. Your Thyroid lab results are normal. But have you checked for TPO thyroid antibodies? It would be good if you would be able to check - high antibodies would confirm Hashimotos and that can cause your symptoms.. even with normal thyroid lab results. at this point thyroid medicine is not recommended as it would send you to the hyper side. Check into dealing with other conditions, as you mentioned fibomilagia and maybe chronic fatigue syndrome too... Good luck to you!

I have had a work up due to my MRI scan showing partial empty sella and white matter changes.  My labs came back and myh cholesterol is always high and on liptrol.  My BUN and Postassium usually low but in normal range this time on the low end though.  My Thyroid was high 7.85 and retook a couple weeks later and 6.0 for the main but the other stuff under it T3 T4 is normal.  What is your opinion?  Thank you
