Does ANA affect me? Or my hyperthyroid?

Does ANA affect me? Or my hyperthyroid?

by Nomes, Aug 26, 2005 12:00AM
Just a thought.
I have ANA (not sure what levels). My GP says this does not affect me at all - it is just interesting to note.
My last GP - I loved him (we have moved!) - discovered it 3 years ago. At that time I didn't have an over-active thryroid. (Now I do)
Are these two related?
Does this ANA thing do anything to my body?

are you talking about the Antinuclear Antibody test?

by ar1281a, Aug 26, 2005 12:00AM
Also, have you tried to get copies of your blood work?

I'm not very familiar with ANA. What I've heard, and I could be wrong, is that's related with diagnosing Lupus when physical symptoms are present (and in that case other tests are also done). However, I've also read that many healthy women will have false positives. I have no idea if ANA is related or not, so sorry can't really help here.

Good you're getting your tests copies

On the last round of tests my GP ran an ANA test on me.  She said it was at the normal to high border (40 somethings or another normals are less than 40).  However someone with Lupus will be up over 300.  So she suggested that we retest it in a couple of months.  The she laughed and said or I could go into a rhumetologist if I wanted.  The reason that is funny is that I walked ino her office feeling normal with a TSH of 190.  I then went to a endocrinologist and have been to the ER 5 times in two weeks.   I told her I thought I'd ignore that test resulta dn just check on it again in a few months.

I had a positive ANA (speckled patttern) about three years ago. At the time I thought I had Lupus. Four years later, I found out I had a lumpy thyroid with cysts - not Lupus. I'm posting this because I think there *is* a connection.  Results of my FNA will be in this week and I'm wondering if there's a connection between a positive ANA and thyroid autoimmune disease.

Thanks. My ANA is around 180. I wasn't feeling well 2 years ago & bthats all they found wrong with me. Now I am hyper.
It probably doesn't mean anything, just curious. My Gp seems to fob me off all the time. She can't be bothered explaining anything to me. (Just wants my money!)
