Finally on Synthroid

by Jennifer_C, Apr 18, 2006 12:00AM
Well, I finally convinted the Dr. to put me on Synthroid. I told him I had done research on Hashimoto's and asked him if felt the disease could be slowed by placing me on medication. He said that there would be no harm on starting me on it so he did. I take 50MCG for 8 days then 100MCG for a month then blood work to see if my throid levels have come up any. I have a couple of questions.
Does this medication increase muscle spasims? I have had rock hard knots in my muscles for a couple of years and most of the time they ache but since I've been taking Synthroid I've noticed the muscle pain is more intense.

Also, will I loose this weight? I've put on about 30 pounds in the last 2 years.

When will the fatigue get better?

Does the muscle tightness ever go away?

Any information would be helpfull. Thank you in advance.

The clinical response varies -- the weight loss depends on the degree of hypothyroidism -- if it was a borderline TSH to begin with then therapy will not likely result in dramatic weight loss -- this will depend on calorie balance (ie diet/exercise)

The fatigue may take 3-6 weeks to lift with treatment once the TSH is at goal (0.5-2.0 in most cases).

The muscle tightness may get better -- if it is getting worse, it may be that you are on too much synthroid.

Repeat TSH etc about 6 weeks after being on 100mcg consistently -- of course let your doc know if you are feeling worse in the meantime and then test sooner....
