GRAVES BLOOD COUNTS

by DMB2801, May 07, 2007 12:00AM
I just had blood work white blood count was alittle low 4.1 and my platelet count was alittle high 420. Can Tapazole do that to your blood counts?  When should I be concerned about my numbers?

by Mark Lupo, M.D., May 08, 2007 12:00AM
This is not likely a problem.  The important thing to follow in addition to the WBC is the neutrophil count (a type of WBC) - tapazole has the potential to dangerously lower absolute neutrophil count (<1000 becomes a concern) - but this is rare.  The slight elevation in PLT count is likely inflammation from the graves -- not a concern.

Also follow liver function while on tapazole.

Always call your doctor if you have fever or other signs of infection.
