Graves or Hashi?

by Glenn G, Jul 22, 2007 12:00AM
I'm confused.
I had my antithyroglobulin checked, it was 3200.
I also had my TSI checked, it was 102, range <129.

TSH 16.878
Triodothyronine (T3) 102  85-205
Triodothyronine Free Serum  2.9  2.3-4.2
Thyroxine (T4) Free direct .85   .61-1.76

What does this mean?
I was told i am Hashi hypo but have hyper symptoms.
SEVERE Brain fog, anxiety, pounding heart etc.

I'm only on 25mcg of synthroid for 4 weeks.
I am retesting FT3, FT4, TSH this week.

Am I hypo or hyper or what?
From what i read, the TSI shows hyper/graves.
Should I retest the antibodies?
What do I do? I need to feel better again, its been 5 months of going crazy daily.

ugh/

You are HYPO (ie high TSH and normal T4/T3 -- aka subclinical or mild hypothyroidism) -- your TSI is normal so this is not Graves.  The Tg-antibody suggests Hashimoto's.

The symptoms can overlap sometimes.  The reason for the low start dose of 25mcg was likely the anxiety & heart pounding -- give it more time and recheck after 6 weeks of being on med, and change dose as necessary to target TSH 0.5-2.0.
