High Cortisol, Low Progesterone, Hypo/hyper thyroidism leading to insomnia?

by Wedthaigirl, Sep 29, 2006 12:00AM
I've had insomnia for the past 2 nights (total sleeplessness with increased energy/heat at night and lethargy during day). I'm 33/F and I belive it's due to high cortisol levels (major stress) that have impaired progesterone levels (responsible for sleep), which adversely affected blood sugar metabolization (hyper/hypo-thyrodism?).  I get "hot" flash at night after sugar/vitamin/mineral intake (doesn't matter what time of day the consumption) and then insomnia.  I know this from experimentation.  I enjoyed good sleep eliminating these from diet for several months until these past nights....I haven't consumed the above at all and hadn't slept a wink in 2 whole nights! Very distressing. I have an appt. with MD on Tue. for blood tests.  I will ask for a referral to endocrinologist.  I read Chastetree berry helps to normalize progesterone levels as well as the progesterone cream, thus helping sleep patterns.  What could be the problem? Hyperadrenia? Low Progesterone? Hyperthyroidism?

Sounds most likely to be the stress.  Checking thyroid sounds like a good idea as well.  I do not manage progesterone/estrogen issues and cannot answer regarding the effect on sleep of if chasteberry is helpful.  The adrenals can be tested - but interpretation of adrenal labs is best left to an endocrinologist.
