High Cortisol and ACTH Levels

by tkelyvt, Dec 26, 2007 10:42AM
I recently had some blood work done, the blood was drawn at 8:30 in the morning and my cortisol level was 22.3 and ACTH was 73. My doctor wanted me to be seen for cushings. I have to be honest that it does not sound like me at all. I have panic and anxiety disorder but she dismissed that it was related to my high levels. But correct me if I'm wrong but ACTH stimulates the production of cortisol which is released during times of panic and anxiety. I'm currently extremely worried about what all is going on and I'm looking for some sort of reassurance this is not serious. I've convinced myself that I have a tumor or some sort of hormonal imbalance that is going to kill me. Any thoughts are advice is greatly appreciated.

The ACTH level seems high, would be best to have a general endocrine evaluation to make sure it is not a pituitary-adrenal problem but this can be seen in cases of stress or anxiety.
