How can thyroid disorder just disappear?

by amos_h6, Apr 13, 2007 12:00AM
I have had hypothyroidism for 8 years. After my last test with a new doctor (have been tested and diagnosed by different doctors) she says it is gone. Previuos er visit a year before could not pick it up either. I have not been on my levothyroxine regularly due to lapses in insurance from husbands job change. Last level I was on was .25 or .025 can't remember has been three years. I have goiter(s) says dr but no hypothyroidism. Doesn't make sense to me. Dr. didn't quite answer my questions. Kinda rushed me out the door. Dr. ran radioactive pill test to check goiters. She says still no hypothyroidism but do have goiters and says there is something strange in there but can't tell what. She doesn't know or wont tell me if cancer but wants me to see endocrinologist. This was a year ago. Lost insurance shortly after this last visit. How serious is this? Have tried several times to go get on county hospital plan but always denied. Have been scared since dr. visit. What does all of this mean? How worried should I be? Have also been told this is inhereted but noone since mom's Great-Aunt has had it (she also died from it). Am I being overly anxious? PLEASE HELP!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

The best way to sort out the nature of a goiter is ultrasound -- also test thyroid antibodies -- you likely have a goiter/hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's -- would at least make sure the TSH is around 1.0 on the levothyroxine and when possible have an ultrasound to see if there is any nodule that may require fine-needle biopsy.
