Hyperthyroid and knee pain - arthiritis?

by sannuska, Sep 03, 2005 12:00AM
Hi again, I have more worries. Me knees have been painful since about the same time that my thyroid became over active, a couple of months ago now. I am not able to run, jump or walk for a long time. I thought it was a result of playing tennis but the pain is not going away, in fact they are getting worse all the time. I am now being tested for auto immune arthiritis (had to ask the doctors to do so), which I have read is related to thyroid conditions. Has anyone else gone through this? How much does the conditions effect your life? I love sports.

Just below your question is a thread started by "Hashimotowacko", we are talking about our joint problems with autoimmune thyroid disease. It's my understanding from medical sources that both hypo and hyper people, equally have problems with this.
I hope you (and we) find more answers for this!

thyroid imbalance can cause joint problems - usually improve with treatment.  Also, anti-thyroid drugs (methimazole/tapazole and PTU) can cause joint pain.....Remember, too, that Graves disease (if this is cause of your hyperthyroid) is an auto-immune disease and may mean that testing you for other autoimmune processes that effect joints may be indicated.

Thanks for your replies! Also checked previous message. Really helpful, will help me to push my doctor to look for an answer, rather than just ignore my pain.

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed w/Grave's about 6 weeks ago.  My dr. put me on methimazole, but last week I started developing horrible pain in my joints, especially knees and wrists.  He switched me to PTU a couple days ago, but the pain has not let up (except w/steroid and meperidine for pain).  He says the joint pain may be from Grave's so he wants to knock it out w/double PTU.  I am afraid to keep taking this drug.  Any thoughts?
