Hyperthyroidism and 17 wks pregnant...

by kimbellanne, Oct 04, 2005 12:00AM
I just got results for throid test and it showed 285 for (free?)T3 (on a scale of 60-180) .07 for the TSH and a normal T4 .97. I am 17.5 weeks pregnant and wondering if I should be concerned or worried?? I have not been diagnosed with any problems in the past (was tested 2 times due to Graves & thyroid conditions on both sides of my family) but have had allot of the same symptoms during each of my pregnancies, one of which was a stillborn @ 37 weeks, other 2 ended in c-sections but were fine: headaches (bad) pitting edema in shins, feet, & ankles, intolerance to heat, etc.Wondering if this could be something that is brought on by my pregnancy since it has come out fine other times (have not ever been tested while pregnant before this time) I'm going to see an internist this week about it, but I am losing sleep... hoping for a little bit of knowledge here.
Thank You!

Yes - this can be brought on by pregnancy - my concern is the high free t3 - this could be Graves disease, an overactive thyroid nodule or mediated by the HCG hormone that comes with pregnancy.

Evaluation:  TSI (immune test for graves), HCG quantitative level, repeat thyroid function in 2-3 weeks to establish a pattern and a thyroid ultrasound to look for nodules.  Your labs currently do not necessarily need anti-thyroid meds, but I usually watch this every month to ensure stability.  Hyperthyroidism tends to improve during pregnancy unless it is a severe graves or an overactive nodule.

Good luck - let us know what the evaluation yields.

Thank you Dr.! I will make sure to keep this in mind when I go to see the internist. My Grandmother has Graves disease and has had a hard time, it is hard to see. My Grandmother (paternal) had hypo, not hyper, but also had a very hard time. I figured if anything I would be on the hypo side due to my being so overweight. Well thanks again!
