Hypothroid for my Mom!!

by class01, May 25, 2007 12:00AM
My Mom is 65 years old and has been diagnosed with Hypothroid (TSH: 7.05) in Dec 2006. has been advised Thyroxine 100 mg one tablet per day.
She had normal Cholesterol of ( total:180/ triglyceride:123) but after this high TSH we tested her for Cholesterol now last week and her numbers are Total: 220/triglycerides:236

she has been diagnosed with diabetics (no family history)also last week of fasting 140/PD:189

she has been started with treatment for Cholesterol and sugar. Please suggest if this should be the way. I feel that one her TSh comes back normal she should have other things come back to control like cholesterol.
When and how frequenty we should test her TSH.
Thanks in advance for all your help...

She has mild hypothyroidism which may increase cholesterol -- in this case by 5-10%.  Correcting the hypothyroidism is appopriate, but unlikely to reverse the insulin resistance syndrome (diabetes, high triglycerides) -- the key here is weight loss.

Some may advocate to treat the hypothyroid AND pursue aggressive lifestyle changes, then repeat lipids/sugar in 3 months and reconsider meds for these issues.
