Does everyone gain weight when being hypo? I had my thyroid removed on April 6th due to cancer and my latest TSH as of this Thursday was 14 however since my surgery I have lost 7 pounds. As soon as I get my TSH gets to 34 I am having the I-131 and I just didn't know if there are people that don't gain weight when hypo or if I should expect weight gain as my TSH increases or after radiation.

NO - not everyone gains -- it is variable.  After the I-131 you will be put on meds which should keep the TSH around 0.1 - 0.3 initially until the cancer status is clear.

To: My thyroid saga
In 1997 they removed my right thyroid lobe due to large nodule which was not cancerous. They monitored the left lobe every year after that. In November 2003 (that was my Thanksgiving present) they found a nodule on my left lobe and did biopsy. It suggested fallicular cancer. It is a long story but I tell you anyway. My wife who is a Master Herbalist immediately gave me several herbal products which I started to take several weeks before the scheduled operation to remove the left lobe. Four doctors recommended the complete removal of it. After several weeks of taking the three herbal remedies my left side around the collar bone started to burn, itch and the skin became very red. I was scared. A few days later these symptoms went away. My wife kokingly said that it was my healing crisis. In December 2003, just before Christmas, I went under the knife. After coming to, the surgeon came to see me and told me that they could not find any trace of cancer. I was elated since, according to my endo, I did not have to go through radiation if it was not cancerous. In any case, three days later the final results came back and the indication was negative for cancer.

Now, going back to your situation. I thouight the TSH should be less than 5, My TSH currently is less than one (I do not remember the exact figure). And, no, I did not gain weight after the operation, my weight remained the same.

All the best to you in your search for better health.
