Hypothyroid & Menses - Does hormone levels drop?

by lllhypogirlll, Jun 15, 2007 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidsim last August, 2006.  40 years of age.  I was in pretty bad shape my TSH level was 80.  My doc said I should have been in a coma. She gave me 100mcg of thyroxine and 25mcg of Cytomel for three months and was getting back to normal.  I went in for more bloodwork after 3 months and my levels were normal, so we discontinued the Cytomel.  I have been doing fairly well but I have noticed that when I get my menses.  I am very tired, lethargic, cloudy head, fall asleep easily. My period typically lasts approx. 5 days.   After my period, I feel better again?  Should I increase my thyroxine level during my period?  Does it have an affect T3/T4 hormone levels?

I usually don't recommend altering the dose during the menses although some patients do describe similiar symptoms and increasing the dose needs to be evaluated to see if this is a safe/effective approach.  You could ask your doc about trying an extra tablet (ie 8 rather than 7) during the week of menses -- should not be a major drawback of trying this.
