Hypothyroid, eating right and exercising

by sueshue, Aug 15, 2005 12:00AM
I have been on the top dose of Synthroid .225 for several years now.  Weight has stabilized at 270lb from my original 150.  Are there any suggestions as I embark on a healthier eating pattern and exercise that will help me reduce.  I am tired of being overweight.  No help from endo except he said I have "no metabolism" which means there's nothing to be done not even surgery.  I try to exercise walking and weights for 40-60 minutes daily. I have managed to lose a grand total these past three weeks of six pounds.  This week nothing. Has anyone ever had any success losing weight?

I hesitate to write to you.  This is the second time I have typed this.  I wanted to encourage you that 2 lbs. per week is a VERY GOOD weight loss.  It is more likely to be permanent if you lose weight wisely.  You can increase your metabolism by gaining muscle through weight lifting and strength training.  The best excercise for weight loss that I have found is walking on a treadmill that has an incline.  It is not such a stress on your joints.  Be careful what you eat and keep excercising.  It took time to gain the weight and it will take time to lose it.  Like I said, 2lbs per week is great....keep up the good work.  Also, it is normal to have a week where you don't lose as much as before.  It is a good idea to take a meal off from dieting once a week.  This will keep your metabolism from slowing because of the decreased calories and it is something to look forward to.  Don't go crazy, just a normal, non-diet meal that you like.  I also avoid fast food like it would kill me.  I think it is terrible for you.  Also, eat healthy snacks.  I try to never let myself get too hungry, then I might overeat.  I hope this was helpful.
