If Not Hasimoto, then what else

by momofmb§rb, Nov 29, 2005 12:00AM
Hi,
I've had 3 TSH tests and the results and dates are as follows:
5/04 3.3 miu/l
5/05 4.1 miu/l
11/05 4.3 miu/l
I also had free T4 tested and the results were
5/04 1.0 ng/dl
5/05 .9 ng/dl
11/05 .9 ng/dl

However, I finally had the antibodies tested 11/05 and the TPO was less than 10 and the antithroglobulin was less than 20.  Can you have hypothyroidism without it being hasimotos?  Is this treatable.  I have lots of hypo symptoms.  total cholesterol went from 155 (in 12/02) to 215 (in 5/05),  my hair is thinning and falling out,  I went from skipping my periods some months to exceedingly heavy in the past 11/2 years.  My nails are very weak and are turning under.  I am constipated and I am freezing cold in a 70 degree house with a sweater on.
Help.

The TSH is borderline - the antibodies are positive in about 80-85% of hashi patients but not all hashi patients.  The ultrasound of the thyroid can show mild inflammation even before the antibodies are positive (this is very new information, so many docs will not endorse an ultrasound in this situation).  With your symtpoms a trial of thyroid hormone treatment to bring the TSH to the 0.5-1.5 range may be worth a trial but make sure other medical problems have been evaluated as well - ie, anemia, liver/kidney problems....

I am so glad you posted this question and anxious to hear the response.  My test results are down below (under "possible endocrine problem").  Anyway, I finally got my labs back yesterday, and my TSH has doubled since late July (it was under 4, now it's 7.85).  No thyroid antibodies.  Endo says he thinks it's "negative antibody Hashimoto's"). I'm wondering what caused the change-- it seems like a fairly big one, after YEARS of having my thyroid just under the diagnosable range to have it suddenly go up like that.

Good luck.
