Iodized salt and thyroid

by blueice37, Nov 27, 2008 01:23PM
Hi. I want to thank you for answering my previous question.  I have discovered today that I use iodized salt. My question is; is there any corrolation with iodized salt and hypothyroid. My hypothesis is taking Synthroid and using iodized salt is counteracting. Could this be why I still feel lousy?  I'd give anything right now to start feeling better. Am I just grasping at straws here.  I do remember, being at a younger age, that the doctor had recommended iodized salt for a goiter I had. Could I have had thyroid disease back then?  The doctor back then did the free thyroxine levels all the time and came back normal.  Thank you in advance.

If you are taking synthroid (for hypothyroid) and this is stable, there is likely no problem at all w/ using iodized salt.  It should not influence thyroid function.  In most cases iodine is healthy for the thyroid, in other cases it can cause hypo or hyperthyroidism.
