Is cytomel dangerous?

by fraleykk, Apr 26, 2007 12:00AM
I have been on 50 mcg of Synthroid for awhile, my TSH has been around 2-2.5 and my T4 was 1.3 last time they checked. I have not felt well since being diagnosed 3 years ago. I am tired all the time, and my brain is foggy. I have asked 2 different endos for Cytomel and neither will give it to me. They both said it was dangerous. I am 27 in good heath (other than they hypo). My GP gave it to me and I felt SO much better 2.5 mcg a day but he said he would rather have an endo monitor me. Is it really dangerous? Why are so many doctors against giving it when so many women feel better taking it? Thanks.

It is not dangerous if properly dosed/monitored.  The dose of 2.5-5mcg 1-2x/day is reasonable.  The reason endos don't usually deal with it is that there is no medical research stating it works better than synthroid alone and it takes more time to manage combination t4/t3 therapy.  TSH goal is the same -- around 1.0.
